Whether it is cowboys or culture you’re after, you’ll find it in Fort Worth, along with smiles as big and broad as the expansive Texas sky. Fort Worth, also known as “Cowtown,” has long lived in the shadow of Dallas (in fact, the two cities have a long-standing rivalry), but it is by no means the lesser of the two, and has come a long way from its beginnings in 1849 as an army camp. Today, the city boasts a lively downtown, world-class museums, splendid architecture and a huge helping of downhome hospitality. Arguably ahead of the pack when it comes to urban planning and renewal, Fort Worth concentrated on developing a pedestrian-friendly downtown scene to encourage an atmosphere friendly to business, residents and visitors. The result is a downtown that has everything within easy walking distance: business offices, shopping, dining, music, and an exciting nightlife. The Fort Worth City planners aren’t stopping there – the Trinity Uptown development located just north of downtown is set to bring retail, office, residential and recreation to the shores of the Trinity River. And just to the south is Lancaster Avenue, which will become a tree-shaded urban village home with street-level shops below and offices and apartments above. Another development, So7 (named for “South of Seventh”) will feature shopping, townhomes and condos that overlook Fort Worth’s center skyline.
