Officially incorporated in 1849, the town of Red Oak was originally known as Possum Trot because of the abundance of opossums in the surrounding area. Later renamed after a nearby creek, the rustic town of Red Oak is a relaxed suburban community only 20 minutes away from Dallas that offers its residents a variety of homes to suit each individual’s unique lifestyle. Perhaps most easily recognized as the exterior location for the film True Stories by David Byrne of the Talking Heads. Priding itself as a business-friendly community, Red Oak’s Industrial Development Corporation, Economic Development Corporation and the Red Oak Area Chamber of Commerce are designed to meet the needs of every business entity. Local sport fans enjoy the wide array of sport associations including soccer, baseball, softball, football, and cheerleading as well as the 18-hole Red Oak Valley Golf course.
