Founded in 1850, Waxahachie has and continues to be an attractive area for the relocation of businesses and future residents. In 2008, more than $70 million in commercial development and more than $30 million in residential development was completed to accommodate the city’s rapid growth. One of the distinct features of Waxahachie is the summer’s stunning display of beautiful pink crape myrtles in full bloom. In 1997, the Texas State Legislature designated Waxahachie as the “Crape Myrtle Capital of Texas.” Another unique characteristic, Waxahachie’s famous wooden laced architecture, has earned it the nickname “Gingerbread City.” The filming of four Academy Award nominated films within Waxahachie’s city limits has also earned the Waxahachie the title of “Movie Capital of Texas.”
Most recently, Waxahachie was one of three cities to receive the First Lady’s Texas Treasures Award for maintaining its Texan heritage through historic building conservation and the authentic feel of its small town sentiment. With this many titles of recognition, it makes sense that Waxahachie’s attractive homestead and historic charm attract future residents from across the nation. Downtown Waxahachie has more than 50 businesses in a 10 block area, and hosts several events and festivals throughout the year. Other attractions include such annual events as the Summer Moonlight Movie Series that encourages citizens to bring their blankets and lawn chairs for free family movies under the stars.
